BRAND NEW American Express Credit Card!

Hope you’re all doing well this week! By the way, did anyone manage to catch the aurora lights last night? Here’s a snap that I got last night at around 11pm…

Now I won’t need to go visit any Scandinavian countries during the winter to try and catch these lights! 😂

Anyways back to this week’s newsletter! Yes, the title of this week’s newsletter is indeed correct! American Express launched a brand new credit card called the American Express Essential Rewards Card which essentially replaced the existing Essential Card.

For those who weren’t aware, American Express quietly discontinued the old Essential card around two months ago. The new card actually looks very similar to the Platinum Edge card, but it’s actually totally different!

Here’s a quick run-through of the card:

• Up to 80,000 bonus AMEX reward points! Earn 20,000 points for each month that you spend at least $1K in the first 4 months.

• $9 monthly fee ($108 per year)

• Earn up to 5x AMEX reward points for the first 10,000 points each month

  • 5x points on restaurants, bars and cafes (including food delivery via UberEats and Menulog)

  • 3x points on select streaming services (this covers pretty much most streaming services in Australia, even Prime!)

  • 2x points at select retailers

  • 1x points on everything else

• Mobile phone screen coverage

• Shopping coverage

So is this card worth it….?

The short answer in my opinion is yes! My longer answer is that this card blows the previous Essential Card out of the water. You get a huge sign-up bonus but the ability to have accelerated earn rates for AMEX reward points that beat even the more premium cards like the AMEX Explorer and AMEX platinum card.

Even if the sign-up bonus reduces to 40K bonus reward points later down the track, I still think this card provides excellent value and is well worth the $9 monthly fee.

If you’re a beginner who's looking to get a new credit card and you were thinking of getting the old Essential card, I would not hesitate to sign up for this card.

Heck even I’m tempted to sign up for this card and I might do so, simply because those earn rates are so good.
