The second best way to earn frequent flyer points ✈️
Hey friends,
So in one of my recently uploaded videos on credit card hacking I talked about purchasing gift cards to easily meet your spend criteria when you’re churning a new credit card.
But you can also just purchase gift cards even when you’re not churning a new credit card to receive a nice boost of frequent flyer points.
So that’s what I wanted to dive into a little bit more today and show you a real life example of just how many points you can accumulate by purchasing gift cards.
🛒 How these gift cards works
So the trick with this method is to purchase the gift cards when Coles and Woolworths are running promotions on them for bonus Flybuy or Everyday Reward Points. Examples of recent promotions that both Coles and Woolworths were running below:
(2,000 bonus Flybuy promotion Coles were running recently)
(10x Everyday Reward points promotion Woolworths are currently running)
For the Coles promotion each gift card earned you 2,000 Flybuy points which is the equivalent to 1,000 Velocity points.
For the Woolworths promotion, assuming you purchased the $500 gift card, you’d receive 5,000 everyday reward points which is the equivalent to 2,500 Qantas points.
Furthermore, if you used a credit card to make those purchases (why wouldn’t you anyway) then you’ll double dip and earn additional reward points!
I recently purchased 10 gift cards during the Coles promotion which earnt me 20,000 Flybuy points equating to 10,000 velocity points and additionally I used my AMEX Platinum Edge credit card to pay for all of them, earning me an additional 7,500 AMEX reward points.
Now you do need to know that there is an activation fee that you need to pay for each gift card that you purchased. For the gift cards that I purchased, there was a $7 activation fee per card, so in total I paid $70 for all of these points.
However, the Flybuy points if converted to money off your grocery bill is worth at least $110. So you’re not actually losing out on any money.
The Woolworths promotion running now only has a $7.95 activiation fee for every 5,000 Everyday Reward points, so better value there.
I personally use these gift cards to pay off my debts that I have to the ATO as they can be used anywhere either in person or online as they just act like normal debit cards.
Debit card payments also have the lowest fees incurred when paying off your debts to the ATO, unless you’re paying via BPay.
That’s all I had to cover off in this weeks newsletter hope everyone has a great week ahead!
