Qatar Qsuite living up to the hype
Hey friends,
This week, I’ve got something a little special to share — our first-ever business class experience... and not just any business class. My wife and I flew 22 hours from Melbourne to Madrid on what many consider to be the best in the sky: Qatar Airways' Qsuite.
Was it everything it’s hyped up to be? Here’s the full scoop from check-in to landing — and yes, the double bed in the sky is real.
🧳 Check-In & Lounge Access
The check-in process at Melbourne airport was quick and smooth with dedicated business class lines.
You’ll receive access to the Marhaba Lounge in Terminal 2. While not spectacular by any means, it does beats the dingy and dark AMEX Centurion Lounge hands-down, with decent tarmac views and just enough comforts to pass the time before boarding.
💺 Seats, Privacy & That “Double Bed”
For the first leg to Doha, we scored the rear-facing center Qsuites (5E & 5F) – the ones that convert into a pseudo-double bed. With sliding privacy doors and soft bedding, it truly felt like a cozy little cabin just for us.
Now one thing to be aware of is that my wife did experience motion sickness during the initial take-off and when the plane was ascending to cruising altitude. However, once we got to cruising altitude you really couldn’t feel the difference between being rear-facing or front-facing. So perhaps take a motion-sickness pill pre-flight if you do suffer from bad motion sickness.
On the second leg to Madrid, we each tried the rear-facing window seats in (1K & 3K), and while this would be ideal for solo travelers, the “togetherness” of the center seats definitely won us over as a couple.

🍴 Dining on demand
One of the highlights was Qatar’s dine-on-demand service. As we were flying on a red-eye flight we ordered meals straight after takeoff.
Qatar’s signature lemon and mint juice was a refreshing start to the dining experience when we boarded, after which the cabin crew took our orders for dinner. Popular dishes can run out, so make sure you put your orders in early!
I opted for the classic Arabic mezze with pita bread for my starter and a black angus beef tenderloin with herb jus as my main course, whilst my wife opted for the roasted pumpkin soup and Australian sea bass and prawns.
For each dining service we always opted for something different so we could try as many dishes as we could!

Whilst the mezze was delicious, the roasted pumpkin soup was next level! And I would definitely recommend ordering the soup over the mezze. (the soup during the second leg was also better than the mezze again… just order the soup!)
🧼 Onboard amenities
Everyone receives a Diptyque amenity kits, with the male and female bags being slightly different, however the actual inclusions are the same. It included:
Nourishing Lip Balm
Fresh Lotion for the Body
Essential Face Cream
Diptyque fragrance
As this was an red-eye flight they also provide you with Qatar and F1 co-branded pajamas, which were super comfortable to sleep in (I actually now use them at home when it gets super cold like it has recently!)
The entertainment system onboard was also great with a massive 21.5” screen, tons of entertainment options, and a responsive handheld remote, it was a solid setup. Only drawback? No full TV box sets, so you’ll have to binge-watch movies instead of series.
🛏 Sleep set-up and comfort
When it was time to sleep, the crew transformed our seats into the “double bed” with mattress toppers and real pillows. The Qsuites “bed mode” is impressively comfortable, with more than enough room (I’m 5'10") and great privacy thanks to the doors. We easily forgot we were on a plane and were both able to get a decent amount of sleep.
🛬 Transit in Doha & The Al Mourjan Lounge
After landing in Doha following our first leg, we only had a 2-hour layover. So we rushed to make the most of the stunning Al Mourjan Lounge — and wow, what a space.
Think soaring ceilings, à la carte dining, spa-like showers with luxury toiletries, and plush quiet zones. It’s easily one of the best business lounges in the world — we just wish we had more time there.
We actually spent so much time here we actually had to rush to our flight and were one of the last ones to board! Take note that it can take quite a bit of time to walk to your gate from the lounge since the airport is so large!
💡 Final Thoughts
Qatar’s Qsuite absolutely lives up to the hype. Despite the cabin class being 8+ years old, it still delivers one of the most private, luxurious, and comfortable business class experiences out there.
If you're flying long-haul — especially as a couple — it’s worth the splurge.
